The events on September 11, 2001 have changed the world forever. Now it is time to stop the terrorists before they strike again. If we are going to win this war, we will need a plan. The Patriot Act is a new set of laws that gives the government better ability to fight terrorism, but it all comes at a loss of some personal privacy. This act identifies possible terrorists before disaster strikes, gives incentives to stop terrorists and makes it a crime to help terrorists. The Patriot Act helps Americans return to their normal lives to not let terrorism conquer.
The governments ability to identify terrorists before they strike is crucial to winning the war on terrorism. The FBI can now place wire taps without court permission, collect DNA from anyone, check credit reports, research library records, research purchases, confirm identities, share intelligence with local law enforcement and keep an electronic fingerprint database of everyone. Sacrificing some personal privacy is important to winning this war. Some consider it unconstitutional, but it is necessary to fight terrorism.
Second, the Patriot Act gives incentive to all to stop terrorists and not aid terrorists in any form. For example: the Attorney General can offer cash awards for leads about terrorists. Also, harboring terrorists in any form has become a crime. If someone is a suspected terrorist, they will be stripped of citizenship which makes it hard to pull off any big terrorist acts undetected. Terrorists can now be detained in secret without court approval and interrogated for information.
Last, the Patriot Act helps give more confidence to the American people. With more confidence, we can return back to our pre-September 11 lives without worry about terrorism. The more terrorism changes our society, the more successful the terrorists will be. Not only do we build confidence in our country, but also we better protect our country from terrorism.
The 175 pages of the Patriot Act were put into effect six weeks after September 11th. The act seemed very necessary at that time, although it seems to be overkill now, but will help us for the better in the future. The Patriot Act is our best protection yet. If we really are going to fight terrorism, we need to keep the Patriot Act in full force, or else the terrorists will win.
